Article I came across in the Australian MX Newspaper, written by Anna Brain. Click the images to enlarge. I have to say that, although it’s a little harsh in expression, I agree with the general intention of the article. “There is room for sexual tension, but intrigue, suspense and the undefined relationship between the doctor and the detective is what makes Sherlock, well, Sherlock.”
I’m gonna fucking puke. I cannot believe this went to print. No woman should play what role, exactly? The role of Doctor Joan Watson? That is the character in question, right? Yeah, definitely agree. A woman cast as a female interpretation of a public domain character, that is seriously horrifying. Quick, get Jude Law to deliver another lacklustre performance before the integrity of the Sherlock Holmes franchise completely disintegrates. They could play up the cross-dressing for laughs, it’d be great.
‘It might be un-feminist or disloyal to say so, but—’ Aye, so you can just go ahead and take the “might be” outta the equation here, Anna Brain. The intention of this article is to state that a woman can only bring sexual intrigue to a role. It assumes that a female character will be heterosexual and have romantic designs on her male companion, and that people who enjoy the character will think of this as a ~bold and edgy~ development. Meanwhile, the people who don’t need their silly faces slapped and can see this for what it is- a huge slight against the man who believed in fairies and disliked Sherlock Holmes- will write vitriol about female characters, or advocate a sexual dynamic between all the incarnations of Holmes and Watson provided it’s the right kind, because a show or movie that furtively dodges the topic of homosexuality is somehow more compelling.
Right, Doctor Watson will be American (Hasn’t House MD practically done that already?) Irene Adler, an American, was portrayed as British in Sherlock, but that was just fine; imagine if they’d made the character a male as well? It’s just supposition, but I don’t think there would have been backlash like this. In fact there might have been some sighs of relief at the neutralization of the perceived female threat to Holmes and Watson’s relationship (whether it be friendship or romance), which I think is the main source of contention over this casting as well, and it’s even more ridiculous since the lady in question is one half of that relationship.
So, what’s the point? I dunno, Anna Brain. That misogyny is alive and well? Maybe the show will be a big pile of shite, but impugning it at this stage is just senseless.
Oh, and Lucy Liu is an accomplished actress but she is Asian so naturally she karate chops her way into her roles. And that Denise Richards quip is so pithy! Really, the only thing missing from this article is the author’s photo, but luckily I have it here:
